Division of Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program
The Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at the University of Utah School of Medicine is a dual clinical and research training program with emphasis in the clinical care of patients with infectious diseases. Fellows complete 12 months of clinical care in general infectious diseases at the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and LDS Hospital. They also gain experience in HIV management and exposure to HIV inpatient and consult services. Infectious diseases fellows also gain experience in treating opportunistic infections common to the HIV patient population. The fellowship also includes experience in travel medicine, sexually transmitted diseases, and microbiology. These are the mandatory components of our program.
During their first year, fellows have two half-day continuity clinics which continue into the second accredited year.
The second year is mainly a research experience. Many fellows remain in the program for a third unaccredited research year; especially if they are interested in academic medicine.
There are opportunities of elective rotations during the second year depending on the fellow's interests. The program encourages fellows to become involved in research at the beginning of their second year. Program faculty are currently engaged in the following research topics:
- Malaria
- Hospital Epidemiology (nosocomial infections)
- Travel Medicine (diarrhea)
- Microbiology laboratory medicine in developing countries
- Herpes Viruses
- Viral Triggers of MS exacerbations
In addition, fellows may complete a one-year bioterrorism fellowship, or spend a year, or more, to complete a microbiology fellowship.
